Ulleskelf's History
Ulleskelf along with Grimston and Kirkby Wharfe were originally Viking settlements. In the Domesday survey of 1086 Ulleskelf was known as Oleschel and was part of the Archbishop of York's land.
Domesday also lists Kirkby Wharfe [Chirchebi] and Grimston [Grimeston].
Niuuehusum with a meadow and mill site is now a lost village somewhere in the Ulleskelf township.
In 1066 at the battle of Fulford Earl Edwin of Mercia moored his boats at Ulleskelf to stop the invading army reaching York.
Later, stone for early work on York minster was shipped from here.
Grimston estate has changed hands many times from the original moated manor house that was thought to have been built by Grim. The original house burnt down whilst under the ownership of William Grimston and he built a new mansion on a more suitable site. During the reign of Elizabeth 1 and James 1 Grimston was owned by the Stanhopes and Sir Edward Stanhope was High Sheriff of Yorkshire. King James visited Grimston as a guest of Sir Edward.
